Application of Extractive Distillation for the Separation of Benzene and Cyclohexane Mixture
نویسنده
چکیده
Distillation is the most widely used separation technique in the chemical process industries. Not all liquid mixtures can be separated by ordinary fractional distillation, however. When the components to be separated of system have relative volatilities of close to 1.00 (i.e. close boiling mixture), separation becomes difficult and expensive because a large number of trays and a high reflux ratio are necessary. Both the equipment and utility will costs increase markedly and the separation by ordinary distillation can become uneconomical. If the mixture forms azeotropes, a different problem arises the azeotropic composition can limit the separation. In such a case, the azeotrope must be “broken” to enable separation. This paper discusses the procedure for separating two close boiling components; i.e. benzene (C6H6) and cyclohexane (C2H12) by extractive distillation technique to overcome the “azeotrope barrier”. A computer simulation has been performed to enable performance comparison among a few candidate solvents which include phenol, aniline and 1,2-propanediol to achieve cyclohexane purity specification in excess of 99%.

Thiocyanate Based Task-specific Ionic Liquids for Separation of Benzene and Cyclohexane
Separation of benzene and cyclohexane is one of the most important processes in the petrochemical industry. However, due to their close boiling points and azeotrope formation, it is difficult to separate cyclohexane and benzene by conventional distillation processes. In this work, five thiocynate-based ionic liquids were investigated as solvent for separation of benzene and cyclohexane using ex...

1,3-Butadiene, BD is produced from C4-cut by extractive distillation. The separation of 1,3-Butadiene from C4-cut is not possible through the conventional distillation processes, because several mixtures have consisted of close boiling points constituents and make azeotrope. The BASF extraction distillation process in BD unit of Jam and Amirkabir Petrochemical Company improves the relative vola...
متن کاملSimulation of Ethanol Extractive Distillation with Mixed Glycols as Separating Agent
Extractive distillation is an alternative for ethanol dehydration processes that has been shown to be more effective than azeotropic distillation and, in close proximity, to be very competitive against the process that uses adsorption with molecular sieves. Glycols have been shown to be the most effective solvents in extractive distillation, mainly ethylene glycol and glycerol. In this work, an...

Extractive distillation is a common process for the separation of homogeneous azeotropic mixtures. In this process entrainer feed flowrate and reflux ratio of the extractive column represent the crucial design degrees of freedom which govern feasibility and operating cost. In this work feasibility and operational stability of the extractive column is related to the analysis of the nonlinear dyn...
متن کاملDehydration of Bioethanol by Hybrid Process Liquid Liquid Extraction/Extractive Distillation
Bioethanol is among the most promising of biofuels because it has an energy content similar to gasoline while generating lower pollutant emissions than gasoline. But, in order to be used as an automotive fuel mixed with gasoline, ethanol must have less than 0.5 wt % of water. To achieve required ethanol purity, in light of the fact that the ethanol water mixture forms an azeotrope, unconvention...
